How to Install Printer Driver? A Quick Step-by-Step Guide

Days are gone when you had to use a CD/DVD drive to install the printer driver.

These days, you can directly install the printer driver from your printer manufacturer’s website.

All you have to do is:

  • Go to the official website of your printer manufacturer first.
  • Here are the links for Epson, Canon, Brother and HP.
  • Then search for your printer model, download the driver setup file and proceed with the installation.
  • I suggest you restart your printer once before installing the driver. I have several times faced issue when trying to install driver without a printer restart.

Pro Tip: What If the Printer Driver Fails to Detect the Printer?

If the setup file fails to detect your printer during the installation, here’s what you need to do.

I often do this whenever I face issues installing driver on my clients’ PCs and it easily resolves the problem.

  • Go to Windows Settings > Printers & scanners.
  • Click the Add device button, wait for a while and click Add manually.
  • Choose the last option that says “Add a local printer…..”
  • Choose the port. For instance, USB001 if it’s a wired printer, Standard TCP/IP if you added printer using the printer’s IP address.
  • Choose the driver. It will generally be the same as the name of your printer.
  • Replace the current driver and you are done.

Honestly, the whole process of installing the printer driver is really a piece of cake.
