How to Avoid a 1240 Error When Printing

1240 error is common in Canon printers that have an operational panel.

If you are unaware of what operational panel means, it is simply the panel that consists of buttons and LCD screen on your printer.

As stated in the error window itself, the error arises when you start printing without lifting this panel.

Moreover, it also occurs if you try to print without pulling out the output tray.

So, what’s the solution? Yes, you got that already!

Lift the panel; pull out the paper output tray and ta-da!😀 Your printer won’t show the error.

But what if doing the needful still does not fix the error?

Well, this is why I am here. Keep reading!

Correct Way to Lift the Operational Panel

While you are raising the operational panel, make sure the panel is fully facing upwards — not tilted, or at an angle.

You must hear a lock sound if the panel is lifted correctly.

What’s even worst is you will get a “1259 error” if there’s anything wrong with the paper output tray.

So, make sure you also pull it out correctly.

Once you do all this, restart your printer and watch the 1240 error go away. Relief!!!😌

What If it Still Does Not Work?

If this is happening, there are two cases:

  • Either the operational panel sensor (that helps to detect the panel’s position) is clogged.
  • Or, it is damaged and you need to remove it to bypass the error.

For the first scenario, get down and observe under the operational panel.

  • You will see a small lever like sensor (typically in white color) attached to the chassis.
  • When this sensor clogs, it cannot detect whether the operational panel is lifted up or closed down, and you encounter the 1240 error.

  • What you can do is take a blower/lint-free cloth and clean that area.
  • Also, hold the operational panel and move it up and down to make sure it also moves the lever/sensor when it is moving.

If it does not, I must say, you have to let go the sensor. What I mean is, you can remove this sensor and bypass the 1240 error.

This way, you won’t face issues while printing even with closed operational panel.

Moreover, it will also give you rid of malfunctioning sensor.

  • Use any sharp object like a knife to remove the lever and the error should go away.
  • Make sure you do not harm the printer or yourself during the process.
